7/25/07 Update to The Intention of This Site

When I first started SecretLOA, it was intended as a marketing experiment promoting products like The Secret and its supporters. While I think The Secret did a lot to show mainstream viewers the power of one’s mind and how what you think about controls your actions, I also disagreed with much the quantum-based pseudo-science in the production and the notion that if you only visualize your dreams, they will magically manifest before your eyes. I’m a strong advocate of taking action.

That said, I also have a high BS detector, so when Bob Proctor and Jack Canfield came out with their SGR Program (which they’ve recently re-launched), I felt it screamed MLM scam. While I still haven’t seen the full briefcase, a colleague of mine has, and she thinks they’re great, but that hasn’t convinced me they’re worth paying $2000. Value is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

Regardless, the launch of the high ticket program left a bad taste in my mouth - more marketers playing to the hype of the minute and preying on countless people in dire need of money - so I’ve decided to remove the ads to the program on my resources page and on the sidebar. I’m sure I have a few links within posts, but since I don’t feel like going back through old posts and deleting things, they’ll just have to stay there.

Moving forward, I’d like for the site to take a more holistic approach to personal development, success, wealth creation, and conscious living. It won’t just be about The Secret or the Law of Attraction - and it certainly won’t be about how you can get rich sitting on your butt in your pajamas eating bon bons and watching tv - but about how to build wealth, find balance, and feel at peace with life.

A few weeks ago, I attended Rich Schefren’s conference in Del Ray Beach, FL. At one point, one of the speakers asked the audience how many meditated or had practiced Qigong. I was amazed at how many attendees raised their hands (myself included). Both are part of my daily routine and I feel completely out of balance when I don’t do either for a few days. I’d like to incorporate some of that stuff within the site as well, as at least in my own experience, that greatly aids my ability to focus, get things done, and be creative.

I’ll still be using affiliate links throughout the site, but I’ll stick to those books, programs, and resources that I, personally, have tried and find value in.

Initial Intention of This Site

This website will follow and document The Secret phenomenon as well as provide a forum for people to discuss the movie. I admit to being a bit of a skeptic and here’s why:

My undergrad degree was in behavioral science, so having a solid science background, I think the “science” mentioned in the movie is utter bunk. I would never say or claim that the Law of Attraction is just like the Law of Gravity. Sorry, but it’s not - and until you provide me with a mathematical formula for the exact physics of the Law of Attraction, I just don’t buy that it’s based on quantum physics… and neither do any legitimate quantum physicists out there.

My second beef with The Secret is its lack of focus on taking action. Yeah, it was sort of mentioned - but it was tossed aside for the catchier phrase “Ask… Believe… Receive.” It sounds nice, but my own belief is that without taking action, it’s just wishful thinking. You can’t expect things to drastically change for you unless you do something different - and that means changing your behavior.

Third, I just don’t buy that we attract every bad thing that happens to us. There is no evidence that supports the notion that being a sourpuss makes you more susceptible to cancer or a physically violent act. I don’t buy that the people in Darfur have attracted their situation any more than I believe that Jews attracted the Holocaust. And I certainly don’t believe that having faith alone (ie no medical treatment) will cure you of cancer or cause your abusive spouse to change his behavior.

That said, I do believe that much of the philosophy behind The Secret has merit. There are many scientific studies out there that look at the importance of visualization and positive thinking (ie most professional athletes visualize the game before they go out and perform - and they visualize excellence, not dropping the ball.) I also believe in the power of focus - studies show that multi-tasking just isn’t nearly as effective.

So, I suppose the purpose of this site is to provide a balanced view on The Secret phenomenon. I’ll link to and provide commentary on both pro- and skeptic-based Secret sites, programs, authors, and news stories.
