As I mentioned in my last post, on Sunday afternoon I started to plan and build the website. (I’ve been building websites since 1995, so this wasn’t a big challenge for me.)
What goes into planning and building a website?
1) Since I had already decided to focus on The Secret, I did some research. This involved doing a variety of Google searches, identifying keywords that people are searching for on Wordtracker.com, and visiting various forums devoted to The Secret and the law of attraction. I then made a list of topics to write about – and did some background research on each of the commentators in The Secret.
2) I already have web hosting (I use and highly recommend AnHosting.com). Anhosting has one of the easiest WordPress installs out there – you just click a button, fill out a quick form to set your username and password, and it does everything for you. (WordPress is top notch software that works for more than just blogs – this entire site is set up with WordPress – and I manage everything through an administrative section that’s as easy as filling out a form and clicking submit.)
3) The default installation of WordPress is good, but the best thing about using it is that it’s easily customizable. I used a free template by WPDesigner.com and then installed a number of plugins including Adsense Deluxe to place Adsense ads throughout my page, SRG Clean Archives for the archives page, Simple Forum for the forum, and WP-Amazon to link products to Amazon.com in my posts, and some plugins to optimize my site for search engines (Google Sitemaps, Head META Description, Optimal Title, SEO Title Tag). Getting them all to play nicely together did require a little programming, but for the most part, this didn’t take long.
4) Next came setting up the Amazon.com aStore. If you’re an affiliate, this means logging into the affiliate section, selecting the “aStore” link and then entering the products you’d like to be displayed. I then embedded the code they gave me within the WordPress template.
5) Finally, I added a few quick things as content. I wrote a post on Why Esther Hicks wasn’t in the 2nd Secret movie and embedded a Yahoo movie into my page so people could watch The Secret movie for free.
